Algorithms Rule the World
Just when you got used to hearing labels like "Panda" in regard to search, Google rolled out the "Hummingbird" algorithm in August. Facebook has a new algorithm they rolled out in December.
We can get caught up in the weekly news and feel overwhelmed from time to time. I'm here to tell you if you have a solid marketing plan in place, you are being transparent and genuine in every channel , and you are keeping things fresh and current, you're going to be just fine.
What do you think of when you hear "search algorithm"? A bunch of super smart, geeky people sitting in an office pushing up their glasses and typing away feverishly on a keyboard while toggling their eyes between three monitors? Then the soccer chant/song of "Oleeee ole ole oleeeee, oleeeee, oleeeee" starts in because it was too much to think about? Hm..
Maybe that's just me.
As defined by SearchEngineLand.com (which is a great news source by the way), the term "search algorithm" is simply "a technical term for what you can think of as a recipe that Google uses to sort through the billions of web pages and other information it has, in order to return what it believes are the best answers."
To sum up, algorithms make it possible for me to ask my phone to "find the best BBQ nearby" and for it to return results to me of places I will likely enjoy. They aren't about tricking people or making it harder to get your message out to your customers. They are about finding the exactly right customer for what you have to offer.
